Our Mission.

1. Learning about systemic racism within our institutions and its impacts on Black folks, Indigenous folks, and other folks of color.
2. Developing actions that we can take in our labs, departments, schools, and larger communities to support marginalized folks and work towards dismantling systemic racism.

Why this is important

The big question: "why can't the climate & diversity committee just handle it?" As academics, we need to personally engage with our racial identities and incorporate a sense of responsibility to action into our lives and work. We have an obligation to critically evaluate the academic spaces we occupy - our labs, departments, societies, and universities, and actively work towards inclusion and dismantling systems of privilege within them.

Why science

It's simple: we have a responsibility to reckon with the history of our particular scientific fields as racist and complicit in organizing society along racist lines. If you are white and you believe diversity, equity, and inclusion are truly important, you will put the work in.

Our Framework

Our education and actions are focused on three interconnected levels:

There are many opportunities for action at these levels. Below are some ALAN is focusing on.
